What should I expect from
Art & Design in Year
7, 8 & 9?

We have designed our Art & Design curriculum at QEGS to engage, inspire and challenge YOU as a developing young artist. You will have the opportunity to explore lots of experimental media, materials and techniques to help you develop knowledge and skills.

Year 7

In Year 7, you will complete a project titled ‘Me, Myself and I’– an exciting, varied project which is designed to be all about YOU! We will focus on building the core skills you need to be successful in Art & Design whilst also learning lots about ourselves and others!

You will have the opportunity to try out lots of new techniques and further develop others. These include drawing, photography, painting and 3D. This will help you to understand your strengths and areas for further development.

Year 8

In Year 8, you will complete a project titled ‘Collections.’ You will begin by researching different collections and how these have influenced artists & designers. This project evolves into a more in depth study of bug and insect collections- called ‘Entomology.’

As part of this project, you will explore photography techniques, zentangle patterns, watercolour painting, drawing from still life & imagination and have the chance to design and create your very own final outcome. You will learn how to become confident when using different media and combining techniques together to achieve successful (and sometimes unexpected) results!

Year 9 Art & Design

At the end of Year 8, you will have the option to study Art & Design and/or Art Textiles in more depth.

If you decide to choose the Art & Design pathway, you will complete an ‘Urban Decay’ Project. As part of this project, you will use your own choice of artist to support your work and take more ownership of your sketchbook and the development of your project.

We will explore abstract art, acrylic paint techniques, photography, sculpture, collage and street art to name a few! You will be encouraged to develop and refine your skills, learn new skills and forge your own artistic style.

Year 9 Art Textiles

If you decide to choose the Art Textiles pathway, you will complete a ‘Shoes’ Project. As part of this project, you will be introduced to new techniques such as ragging, weaving, patchwork, print making, embroidery, fashion illustration etc inspired by a broad range of contemporary and historical designers.
